Location
Elgin County is a region of Southwestern Ontario which includes Malahide, Aylmer, Bayham, West Elgin, Southwood and Dutton. The county has a population of 50,000 with over 35,000 residential homes.
Housing Market
In 2017, 674 homes were sold in the Elgin County region at an average price of $282,866. This is a 3 per cent increase from 2016 and an astonishing 68 per cent increase from five years ago. In total, there were 897 new residential listings to Elgin County and it took an average of 2.6 months for each house to sell. At any given time, there was an average of 146 homes for sale in the area. The total value of homes sold in the county was nearly 200 million dollars.
History
Elgin County dates back to 1851 — originally recognized as the United Counties of Middlesex and Elgin, however the two regions separated two years later.
There’s no shortage of historical attractions in Elgin County! The region has a number of museums including the Aylmer-Malahide Museum & Archives, Backus-Page House Museum, Canada Southern Railway Station, Edison Museum of Vienna, Elgin Military Museum, the Gay Lea Dairy Museum and the Sparta and District Historical Society.
Local Attractions & Culture
Elgin County is well-known for their “agritourism” sector which includes fruit and apple picking, farmers markets, horseback riding, ranches and more. The Horton Farmers’ Market has been an integral part of the community since 1878 with local produce and artisans from across Elgin County.
In terms of art, Elgin County offers a diverse range of studios, galleries and museums. Most notably, the Art Emporium Port Stanley, the Aylmer Performing Arts Council, Clayworks Studio, Concreations, Julia Hansford’s Sparta Studio, the Minerva Art Gallery and the Port Stanley Festival Theater.
