Location
The rural county of Middlesex is located in Southwestern Ontario. It is surrounded by Huron, Perth, Oxford, Elgin, Chatham-Kent and Lambton Counties. While London, Ont. is located within Middlesex county, the municipality is run independently. Including the City of London and three Native reserves in the area, the population of Middlesex County is 455,000.
The county is broken into eight municipalities: Strathroy-Caradoc, Middlesex Centre, Thames Centre, North Middlesex, Southwest Middlesex, Lucan Biddulph, Adelaide Metcalfe and Newbury. Chippewas of the Thames 42, Munsee-Delaware 1 and Oneida 41 are three reserves within the Middlesex area, however they are separate from the county.
Housing Market
In 2017, 814 homes were sold in Middlesex County at an average price of $401,203. This is a 30 per cent increase from 2016 and an astonishing 93 per cent increase from five years ago. In total, there were 1,243 new residential listings to Middlesex County and it took an average of 2.8 months for each house to sell. At any given time, there was an average of 191 homes for sale in the area. The total value of homes sold in the county was over 325 million dollars.
History
Middlesex County has a rich history dating back to the late 1700’s when it was originally recognized as Suffolk County. In 1798 when the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada officially recognized Middlesex County as a part of the London District.
Local Attractions & Culture
Middlesex County is well known for their agriculture which leads their agri-tourism attractions. Apple Land Station, Heeman’s strawberry picking, Kustermans Berry Farm and Tree Lane Farms offer family fun throughout the different seasons.
Notable tourist attractions across the county include the Delaware Speedyway, Mustang Drive-In, Purple Hill Country Music Hall, Fanshawe Pioneer Village, Komoka Railway Museum, Lucan Area Heritage & Donnelly Museum and t he Ska-Nah-Doht Museum. Middlesex also has a number of conservation areas, fishing areas golf courses.
Education
Middlesex County is home to Western University and Fanshawe College.
